Feature Production
How can I apply for financing for my film?
The first step is to attach to the project an experienced New Zealand producer who will then undertake the application process. Applications that do not have a sufficiently experienced producer will not be accepted.
What counts as an "experienced producer"?
A producer applying to the NZFC for production financing must have a proven track-record in feature film production or a thorough and successful record of producing short films, high-end television drama, and/or advertisements.
How much money can I apply for?
Each project is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. As a general rule, the NZFC would not expect to put more than $2-3million into one project. The prior attachment of private investment and market pre-sales is encouraged.
Can I apply for financing for the whole budget?
The NZFC does consider 100% financing of low budget films.
Is there a form I need to fill in?
Yes. An application cover sheet must be provided with each application. It can be downloaded from the Production Financing page.
What are the deadlines for making applications?
Board Meetings are held six times a year. The deadlines for applications are available for download here: http://www.nzfilm.co.nz/AboutUs/Board.aspx
Who decides whether or not I get funding?
The NZFC Board makes all production financing decisions.
When will I be notified of the result?
Producers are notified within 24 hours of a decision being made.
Does the NZFC finance documentaries?
The NZFC will consider applications for production financing for cinematic documentaries in exceptional circumstances. The criteria under which documentaries will be considered for production finance are the same as those for feature film dramas. To find a cinema audience a documentary feature film must be driven by an idea, a theme, a character and/or a vision of sufficient scope to make people pay to go to a cinema to see it. As for all our dramatic feature film proposals we expect to see demonstrated market support for a project such as letters of interest from New Zealand cinema distributors and preferably also international distributors.
Can I apply for single project production financing for a low budget feature?
Yes.
I've got a great script and I think Peter Jackson would be the ideal director for it. What should I do?
Wingnut Films have advised us that Peter does not read any unsolicited material sent to him and is not looking to take on any new projects. His current schedule of productions will keep him busy for many years to come.
Specific requirements, criteria and helpful suggestions are provided in the application pack guidelines. Applications should not be made without reading the full guidelines.
