Cannes 2010 Résidence du Festival

In 1998, the Festival de Cannes created the Cinéfondation to inspire and support the next generation of international filmmakers. Since then, with the help of the Festival, the Cinéfondation has developed complementary programmes to help achieve its goal.

One of these programmes is the Festival de Cannes Résidence.

Every year, the Festival de Cannes Résidence welcomes 12 young filmmakers from all over the world who are working on their first or second feature film. A jury selects 6 candidates for each of the two four-and-a-half-month sessions per year.

Since its creation in 2000, the Résidence has welcomed more than seventy filmmakers from more than forty different countries. It makes available to them a place of residence in the heart of Paris, a personalised programme accompanying the writing of their scripts, and a collective programme of forums with film industry professionals. Nearly fifty filmmakers emerging from the great halls of this "Villa Médicis" of cinema have seen their films selected by international festivals and distributed in theatres. The residents equally benefit from:

  • a grant of €800 per month
  • free access to a large number Paris cinemas
  • French lessons (optional)
  • the possibility of attending festivals during their stay

The candidates are selected on the strength of the short films, or the first feature, that they have already directed as well as on their planned feature and the reasons why they wish to participate in the Residence’s programme.

The first New Zealander to attend the Résidence is writer& director Daniel Borgman whose short film Lars and Peter screened in Competition at Cannes in 2009. Daniel is attending the Cannes Résidence with financial assistance from the NZFC.

Applicants must apply directly to Festival de Cannes Résidence, approaching the NZFC for financial assistance only once an acceptance letter has been received. The application deadline for selection for the next session (October 1st 2010 - February 15th 2011) is April 1st 2010.
