Genre Workshop
The New Zealand Film Commission, in association with Film Victoria, invites applications from writers, writer/directors, producers and developers to attend a practical, hands-on, interactive 3-day workshop from Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th March.
in Melbourne. This workshop will explore film genres including Thriller / Comedy / Horror / Rom-Com and hybrid genres. It is intended to provide a range of practical analytical genre skills and tools that can be applied easily and effectively to feature film projects that participants are currently working on or may go on to develop throughout their careers.
GENRE TOOLS is taught by Simon van der Borgh and Jonathan Rawlinson from the UK, both of whom have extensive experience of teaching development skills to established film industry personnel worldwide. Their workshop uses a combination of lectures, analysis, interaction and writing.
The topics covered will include:
- What is genre, why do we need it, when & how should we use it?
- Genre character types
- Written character exercise for group discussion
- Narrative structure / the world of the story / timeframe
- How to reinvent & reinvigorate traditional film genres
- Case studies
- Content, effect & tone
NZFC will assist up to 4 individuals to attend the workshop in Melbourne, which runs for 3 days from Tuesday 16th to Thursday 18th March.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who have lived in New Zealand for at least the last six months.
Applications are invited from individuals or teams of 2 people who are currently developing specific genre projects or are committed to expanding their skills in working with genre films.
Your application must include:
- A completed cover sheet.
- A letter outlining why you want to attend the workshop and the perceived benefit from attendance.
- Details of projects on your slate including genre, logline and a paragraph description.
- A one-page CV for each applicant.
Applications must be received by 5pm Wednesday 24th February. Please email your application in a single document to development@nzfilm.co.nz.
Successful applicants will be contacted by Friday February 26th and will receive a grant of NZ$2000 per person to assist with travel and accommodation expenses.
