Hadezhda Ivanova, a very famous Bulgarian folksinger, writes to a woman...a stranger, in Sydney, Australia. She wants sponsorship to bring her raw and ancient singing to the West. Maria, the stranger, does not want a 'Singing Slav' in her inner-city life. She has perfected the western art of self-interest.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT - Christina Andreef
"Excursion to the Bridge of Friendship is a musical. It features the raw, ancient, agrarian folksinging of Bulgaria. These outrageous sounds were the 'easy-listening' of my household in small-town New Zealand in the '60s.
I spent my childhood feeling completely reasonable about detesting that kind of singing. it was radical, during the making of my first short film, to discover that same music, just there, under the skin. It began to feel good! Very groovy!
We made this film for fun; to explore the music and use it metaphorically to talk about cultural difference/cultural smaeness/cultural misunderstanding."
