Rustling

During a rushed lesson from their father on butchering a stolen sheep, 15-year-old Hoss and his 11-year-old brother Blue notice that their act has orphaned a baby lamb. When Blue refuses to eat the resulting meal, his father’s temper ignites. Later, Hoss warns Blue to let it go. But in the morning, Blue has defied them and rescued the lamb overnight. When their father is out, Hoss points out to Blue that their father – or even Hoss himself – will kill the animal. Blue, upset, decides to runaway with the lamb. Hoss, after butchering the rest of the previous night’s ewe, goes in search of his brother. He finds Blue and the lamb taking refuge in a rundown getaway car. There, Blue asks Hoss if he will help him. Hoss sees his brother hurting. But when Hoss  shows his father the lamb and asks to keep it, the man tasks Hoss with killing it himself. Hoss tries, but with a knife to the lamb’s throat, finds himself unable to. Instead, he wakes his brother with a plan. The next morning, the father opens the door and sees grass everywhere, on every surface. Hoss and Blue have turned their bedroom into a grassy haven for the lamb, finally standing up to their father, telling him, ‘we’re keeping it.’
